Working with Poinsettia – Important Tips

Poinsettia — known in French as étoile de Noël (“Christmas Star”) and in Turkish as Atatürk Flower—releases a white, toxic sap when its stems are cut or leaves are removed. Please handle it carefully, the sap can be harmful to the eyes.

To stop the sap from flowing, hold the cut end briefly over a candle flame or lighter for 10–20 seconds. This seals the cut and prevents further leakage.

Poinsettia also has a short vase life. When it begins to wilt after a few days, remove the stem, trim 1–2 cm from the end, and place it in very hot water (near boiling) for about 30 seconds. Immediately immerse it in cold water. Within about an hour, the stems will revive beautifully.
