Christmas Time in Calvin’s City – Sogetsu Ikebana Arrangement in Geneva
Geneva — Calvin’s city — may approach Christmas with more modesty than many other Christian countries, shaped by its Protestant work ethic and tradition of simplicity. Yet the most important religious holiday of the year still leaves its mark everywhere throughout December, gently weaving its way into daily life — including Ikebana.
Materials and Design
For this year’s Christmas Ikebana arrangement, blue spruce branches served as the main material. To capture the traditional red and white color palette, I used poinsettia together with white chrysanthemums.
From the angle in which the photo was taken, the spectacular poinsettia in the foreground hides the chrysanthemums behind it, which are supported by a large pine cone.
I created this arrangement in the Sogetsu School Variation No. 4 – Upright Style, a form in which the secondary main branch (soe) is not used.
Working with Poinsettia – Important Tips
Poinsettia — known in French as étoile de Noël (“Christmas Star”) and in Turkish as Atatürk Flower—releases a white, toxic sap when its stems are cut or leaves are removed. Please handle it carefully, the sap can be harmful to the eyes.
To stop the sap from flowing, hold the cut end briefly over a candle flame or lighter for 10–20 seconds. This seals the cut and prevents further leakage.
Poinsettia also has a short vase life. When it begins to wilt after a few days, remove the stem, trim 1–2 cm from the end, and place it in very hot water (near boiling) for about 30 seconds. Immediately immerse it in cold water. Within about an hour, the stems will revive beautifully.
Embracing the Season Through Ikebana
Even in a city where Christmas is celebrated quietly, nature offers endless possibilities for creative expression. Through this seasonal arrangement, I continue to explore how Sogetsu Ikebana can reflect not only the beauty of the moment but also the gentle spirit of the holiday season.

Cenevre'de Noel Zamanı
Bu seneki Noel düzenlemesinde mavi ladin dalları ana malzememiz oldu. Geleneksel kırmızı ve beyaz renkleri vermek için, Fransızca'da Noel Yıldızı denen puansetya ile beyaz krizantemler kullandık. Fotoğrafın çekildiği açıdan, puansetyanın olanca görkemiyle önünü kapattığı krizantemleri arkada kocaman bir çam kozalağı destekliyor.
Bu aranjmanı Sogetsu Okulu Variation No:4 Upright Style (Dik Tarzda 4. Çeşitleme) usulünde yaptım. Bu tarzda ikinci ana dal soe kullanılmıyor.
Önemli bilgi: Puansetya (bizde Atatürk çiçeği diye de bilinir) dalları kesildiğinde veya yaprakları kopartıldığında beyaz toksik bir süt çıkarır. Lütfen dikkat edin, gözler için tehlikelidir. Kestiğiniz yeri bir mum veya çakmak alevinde 10-20 saniye yakın. Bu işlem, dallardan çıkan sütün kesilmesini sağlar. Detaylar için bu yazıya bakabilirsiniz.
Puansetya vazoda uzun süre durmaz. Bir kaç gün sonra pörsüdüğü zaman, dalı yerinden çıkarıp ucunu 1-2 m kesin ve kaynara yakın çok sıcak suda yarım dakika kadar bekletin. Hemen ardından soğuk suya daldırın. Bir saat sonra dallarınız canlanacaktır.
